Databases represent the backbone of most organizations. And Oracle databases in particular have become the mainstream data repository for most mission-critical environments. Some of the largest companies and organizations in the world rely on Oracle databases to store their most important data. The biggest challenge organizations face relative to an Oracle database is to maintain these databases at optimum performance and reliability without breaking the bank. This paper discusses the storage capabilities customers should consider when choosing storage to support an Oracle database environment.

Modernize your applications quickly Many organizations are finding their legacy technology to be inadequate due to its rigidity and high costs. In search of more flexible and cost-effective solutions, many are turning to the cloud. Most Independent Software Vendors (ISVs), however, still build their solutions on commercial databases that are expensive and time-consuming for their customers to deploy and maintain. This is a significant undertaking that can hinder adoption. To address these challenges head on, ISVs can modernize their applications on Amazon Aurora, a database offering from AWS that combines the reliability and performance of commercial databases with the cost-effectiveness and flexibility of open source solutions. In this webinar, you will learn how Virtusa, an AWS Partner Network (APN) Premier Consulting Partner, can accelerate your application modernization journey and help you grow your business. What if you could reduce the cost of running Oracle databases and improve database performance at the same time? What would it mean to your enterprise and your IT operations? Oracle databases play a critical role in many enterprises. They’re the engines that drive critical online transaction (OLTP) and online analytical (OLAP) processing applications, the lifeblood of the business. These databases also create a unique challenge for IT leaders charged with improving productivity and driving new revenue opportunities while simultaneously reducing costs.

Oracle has just announced a new microprocessor, and the servers and engineered system that are powered by it. The SPARC M8 processor fits in the palm of your hand, but it contains the result of years of co-engineering of hardware and software together to run enterprise applications with unprecedented speed and security. The SPARC M8 chip contains 32 of today’s most powerful cores for running Oracle Database and Java applications. Benchmarking data shows that the performance of these cores reaches twice the performance of Intel’s x86 cores. This is the result of exhaustive work on designing smart execution units and threading architecture, and on balancing metrics such as core count, memory and IO bandwidth. It also required millions of hours in testing chip design and operating system software on real workloads for database and Java. Having faster cores means increasing application capability while keeping the core count and software investment under control. In other words, a boost

The Software in Silicon design of the SPARC M7 processor, and the recently announced SPARC S7 processor, implement memory access validation directly into the processor so that you can protect application data that resides in memory. It also includes on-chip Data Analytics Accelerator (DAX) engines that are specifically designed to accelerate analytic functions. The DAX engines make in-memory databases and applications run much faster, plus they significantly increase usable memory capacity by allowing compressed databases to be stored in memory without a performance penalty. The following Software in Silicon technologies are implemented in the SPARC S7 and M7 processors: Note: Security in Silicon encompasses both Silicon Secured Memory and cryptographic instruction acceleration, whereas SQL in Silicon includes In-Memory Query Acceleration and In-Line Decompression. Silicon Secured Memory is the first-ever end-to-end implementation of memory-access validation done in hardware. It

Databases have long served as the lifeline of the business. Therefore, it is no surprise that performance has always been top of mind. Whether it be a traditional row-formatted database to handle millions of transactions a day or a columnar database for advanced analytics to help uncover deep insights about the business, the goal is to service all requests as quickly as possible. This is especially true as organizations look to gain an edge on their competition by analyzing data from their transactional (OLTP) database to make more informed business decisions. The traditional model (see Figure 1) for doing this leverages two separate sets of resources, with an ETL being required to transfer the data from the OLTP database to a data warehouse for analysis. Two obvious problems exist with this implementation. First, I/O bottlenecks can quickly arise because the databases reside on disk and second, analysis is constantly being done on stale data. In-memory databases have helped address p

Your business may need to keep track of dozens of different initiatives—but that doesn’t mean you need dozens of separate storage solutions to get the job done. To reduce complexity, your business may consider storage solutions that can take care of multiple jobs at once without sacrificing performance. For example, if you operate a brick-and-mortar store and an online store, you should be able to retrieve customer data from both sources without compromising transactional database performance. The all-flash Dell EMC™ SC5020 storage array aims to be just such a solution.

Your enterprise runs its critical applications on Oracle Databases, and as an enterprise IT leader, maintaining the performance and availability of your databases is among your top priorities. Any degradation in performance or loss of data could result in serious business disruption and loss of revenue, so protecting this vital asset is a must. There are many causes of data loss— administration errors, system or media failures, cyberattacks, and more—but we often overlook design flaws in the very systems meant to protect data: general-purpose backup systems.

T raditional backup systems fail to meet the needs of modern organizations by focusing on backup, not recovery. They treat databases as generic files to be copied, rather than as transactional workloads with specific data integrity, consistency, performance, and availability requirements. Additionally, highly regulated industries, such as financial services, are subject to ever?increasing regulatory mandates that require stringent protection against data breaches, data loss, malware, ransomware, and other risks. These risks require fiduciary?class data recovery to eliminate data loss exposure and ensure data integrity and compliance. This book explains modern database protection and recovery challenges (Chapter 1), the important aspects of a database protection and recovery solution (Chapter 2), Oracle’s database protection and recovery solutions (Chapter 3), and key reasons to choose Oracle for your database protection and recovery needs (Chapter 4).
